MOUSIE & THE TRAPS
Genevieve Hernandez, her sister Susan and their friend Thelma Flores began singing together in 1964. Wherever they went, they sang Supremes songs. “Nobody ever told us to shut up, so I guess we sounded pretty good”, says Thelma. The girls got themselves a manager and began performing around Chicago. While waiting to sing at a hop one night, the MC asked them their name. “We’re the Mystic Styles”, replied Thelma. “I’m Thelma, this is Susan and this is our lead singer Genevieve, but we call her Mousie.” A few minutes later he introduced them on stage as Mousie & the Traps. They thought the name was dumb, but their manager said it was catchy, so they kept it.
“We first met the trio at one of our engagements”, recalls James Holvay of local band the Mob. “We brought them on stage during our second set and they sang ‘Dancing In The Street’. The crowd loved them so much we decided to make them a part of our show.” James wrote two songs, recorded there with the girls and signed a deal for their release on the Toddlin Town label. “The highlight of our career”, recalls Thelma, “was recording ‘How About You’ and ‘It’s All In The Way’ and performing 10 days at the Dick Clark Young Worlds Fair at the Chicago Amphitheater. What a thrill it was, and a memory that has lasted forever.

Allstate Distributors Daylight Records 1000 Produced by J. DeFrancesco
“OPEN THE DOOR TO YOUR HEART” – Released 1968. This was a song that the group performed in their club set. At the suggestion of their then manager, Joe DeFrancesco he brought them into RCA studios in Chicago and recorded the trak. The MOB were previously signed to Cameo/Parkway where they had only “1” release. Their manager then went to Mercury Records where they had only “1” release too. The group had their challenges, trying to convince record labels that having a horn section in a rock/r&b band was the “new sound” but nobody got it.
“Open The Door” did receive local record play on WCFL but at the request of their manager, Joe DeFrancesco had it pulled from their playlist. He didn’t like the way it sounded on the radio.
Many years later apparently it became a hit over in the UK for the “northern soul fans."
The MOB, band members: Gary Beisbier – alto, tenor and bari sax, keys, valve trombone, b/g vocals and arranger. Jimmy Ford – trumpet, flugelhorn, percussion. Big Al Herrera – vocals, tenor sax. James Holvay (aka Jimmy Soul) – guitar, bass, vocals. Tony Nedza – B3 organ, keys, keyboard bass, trumpet and backing vocals. Bobby Ruffino – drums, percussion . Mike Sistak – guitar, trombone, slide guitar and vocals.

Cameo Records, a subsidiary of Cameo-Parkway Records. Mid-1967 Cameo-Parkway became a subsidiary of MGM Records. Late 1967, the Cameo-Parkway company was sold to Allen Klein and renamed ABKCO Records, with Bell Records acquiring its remaining subsidiary Vando label. Cameo-Parkway Records shut down in September 1967.
Mercury Records founded by Irving Green, Berle Adams, Ray Greenberg and Arthur Talmadge in Chicago, 1945. In 1965, Jerry Ross worked in A&R (Artists & Repertoire).
Twilight Records founded March 1967 in Chicago by Peter H. Wright. After five releases, the company was renamed Twinight because Hush Records of Sunnyvale, CA owned the Twilight name. Twilight offices: 185 N. Wabash, 166 E. Superior (now the Summerfield Suites Hotel), after 1969 in Streeterville Center 233 E. Erie, Suite 408. Rehearsal space was rented in the New Michigan Hotel, 2135 S. Michigan Ave. Twinight's pressing, distributor sales and marketing handled by All State Record Distributing Company (owned by Paul Glass of USA Records) until August 1971, thereafter handled by Twinight.
Heritage Records founded in 1968 by Jerry Ross Productions distributed by MGM Records until 1970. Prior, Ross had worked in artists and repertoire (A&R) division of Mercury Records. In 1969, Ross founded Colossus Records distributed by MGM Records until 1971 (brothers Jerry Ross and Arthur B. Ross principles in Heritage Records and Colossus Records).
FUN FACT: The Colossus cover of THE MOB was designed by David Krieger, Creative Director of DFK Inc.
After the first Colossus LP, cassette and 8-Track, Jerry Ross with The MOB went back to New York and recorded 12 songs for a second album in April 1971. Colossus released "Where You Lead" followed by "Money (That's What I Want)" as singles but there was no second Colossus LP. At this time, Ross was also head of East Coast operations for Motown Records. The Motown acetate reference recording only contains 11 of the 12 songs recorded in the session. "The Heritage Sessions" CD from 1995 contains many from the mono reference Motown acetate JO-201571 dated 8-18-71. The acetate and many other items were auctioned from the Detroit mansion of Barry Gordy in 2017.
FUN FACT: Colossus released only nine albums by either a group or artist in the CS-1000 series and two CGS-5000 series
The MOB sound recordings from the Colossus Records era became the property of REPS Music Group (with team member Jerry Ross). Ross exclusively licensed 19 tracks to Sequel Record a Castle Communications PLC Group Company in 1995. In 1999, Sequel was taken over by Sanctuary Records Group Ltd. of Castle Music Ltd. When Jerry died in 2017, his daughter Cheri continues as team member of REPS Music Group.
MGM Records started by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1946. In 1972, MGM Records sold to PolyGram with perpetual rights to the MGM Records name and a ten-year license to use the MGM trademark and logo. In 1976, MGM Records and its artists absorbed by PolyGram's subsidiary label Polydor Records.
Private Stock Records Ltd. founded in 1974 by Larry Uttal (formerly of Bell Records and Madison Records). Self-distributed until it closed in 1978 (except in Europe, manufactured and distributed by EMI Records). Larry died in 1993, his son Jia has control of the catalogue.
EMI Italiana S.p.A., subsidiary of EMI
Odyssey Record Corp a division of Odyssey Entertainment Ind. was owned by Don Weiss, former Roulette Records employee. Don Weiss Productions, Inc. operated from April 4, 1979 to April 1, 1981 in Los Angeles, CA. Jerry Ross produced the last two songs on the last vinyl 45 single by The MOB. One other recording from The MOB "Medley: Everyday People/Love Power" may be found on the Sequel CD "THE MOB: The Heritage Sessions".
